Lois Hole, Alberta's Lieutenant Governor, died on January 6, 2005 from stomach cancer.

Hole, who was in her 70's, was beloved for her warm smile, hugs, and passion for Alberta. She was only the second woman in the history of the province to become Lieutenant Governor, the Queen's local representative. She was appointed the position in 2000.

Lois HOle One of Edmonton's most recognizable residents, Hole was also known as a gardening expert, writing several books on the subject as well as running Hole's Greenhouse with her family. She was a member of the Order of Canada, and outspoken about issues such as the Arts, literacy, and health.

Hole was predeceased by her husband, who died of cancer in 2003 only one month after Hole announced that she herself was ill. She is survived by two sons and three grandchildren.
