Winter Life in Edmonton

Dateline: 01/18/98

Well, all that fluffy white stuff on the ground means only one thing -- winter is here. But we've all known that for several months now, haven't we?

Cold weather and snow are facts of life in Edmonton, ones which should not stop us from having a good time. When it's not overwhelmingly cold, there are lots of outdoor activities to do -- skiing (cross-country and downhill), ice skating, hiking, snow-shoeing, and more. I have even seen a few brave souls try cycling in the snow, but you sure won't catch me out there on my mountain bike any time soon!

Before embarking on any outdoor activities, especially ones in which you will be outside for a long time, more than a couple of hours, it's always important to check out a weather forecast. Environment Canada is one of the most reliable sources for current weather conditions and advance forecasts.

The next question is where to go and what to do. It is a little known fact that the Valley Zoo is open year-round. Not all of the displays are outdoors, and it is interesting to see how the animal life differs in the winter.

Edmonton's Ribbon of Green (otherwise known as the River Valley Parks system) is now a Ribbon of White, but that is just great if you are into cross-country skiing -- find out where the best trails are. Ditto for downhill skiing clubs and facilities. There are also several natural ice skating ovals, most with changing and washroom facilities.

But maybe heading for the great outdoors isn't your thing. Next week I am going to take a look at some of the best indoor attractions Edmonton has to offer -- the perfect places for warm, indoor fun!
