With more than 30 000 students enrolled in 200 undergraduate and 170 graduate programs, the University of Alberta is the size of a small town. The campus, located on the south side of the city, houses several student residences, a shopping mall (the HUB International Marketplace), the Van Vliet athletic facility, -- plus, there is the Faculté St-Jean, the French language satellite campus a few kilometers away on 84th avenue and 91 street.

The U of A opened its doors in 1908 and is now known for its research activities. In 1998/1999 the school received more than $170 million in external research funding.

There is also a distinct international flavour to the University -- more than 1000 students from over 100 countries attend. Alumni, close to 200 000 of them, live around the world, and there are active alumni groups in 44 locations.

When it comes to choosing an academic program, there is Arts, Business, Education, Medicine and Dentistry, and much more.

Many Edmontonians are familiar with Golden Bears hockey and football, as well as the women's Pandas basketball and volleyball teams. University of Alberta sports teams took four gold, two silver and three bronze medals in national competitions in 1999/2000, including the Panda's women's volleyball team winning the Canadian Intercollegiate champsionship for the sixth year in a row.

Student services abound at the U of A. Career and Placement Services holds many career fairs and workshops throughout the year, and even will set up a mock interview to give an idea of what the working world is like. At the University Health Centre, students don't need an appointment and can expect confidential servce from health care professionals who are experienced with working with students. If the strett of University life is getting too much, one can head for Student Counselling Services, and the Graduate Student's Association exists to serve the unique needs of -- who else? -- graduate students.
