Fun in the Snow, Part Two

Dateline: 02/07/00

Many of the Attractions in Edmonton are open year round.

Edmonton is an ideal place to live if you like snow and colder temperatures for a large part of the year. Last time I pointed out some of the many outdoor activities in which you can partake if you enjoy spending time outdoors during the winter.

But I know that some of you, while enjoying the natural beauty of the snow - from a distance -- prefer the warmth that staying inside brings. The problem is, it can get sort of boring staying home all the time -- but the good news is that there are some great indoor attractions that are convenient, inexpensive, and best of all, fun.

The Provincial Museum of Alberta features displays on natural history, human history, and education.

It is always warm at the Muttart Conservatory. Each of the four pyramids features flora and fauna from different climate areas of the world. There are lots of live birds flying around (watch out for air-bomb attacks:-) and the desert pavilion is wonderfully warm year round.

The John Janzen Nature Centre is a facility designed to raise awareness of nature in an urban setting. Located just off the Whitemud Freeway, about as urban a setting as you can get, the centre has interpretation and displays for all kinds of wildlife you can spot right in your own backyard.

Two higly underrated attractions are the Telephone Historical Centre and Alberta Aviation Museum. Both museums offer a glimpse into the history of each of their respective topics, providing insight into the history of Edmonton at the same time.

Winter is a fact of life in Edmonton. The best you can do is sit back, relax, and enjoy it. And don't forget to stay warm!
