When planning a vacation, there are two important considerations to keep in mind -- where you are going to stay, and what you are going to do once you get there. Last week we looked at planning a vacation in Edmonton, particularly how to get here and where to stay. But, as the saying goes, getting there is only half the fun -- the other half is all the things to do once you're in the city.
I might as well just come out and say it. Most people who visit the city from abroad are here for one reason, and one reason only -- to visit West Edmonton Mall. And for good reason. There is an indoor amusement park, water park, many stores, submarine rides, even a hotel. Conceivably, one could come to Edmonton and not even ever leave the Mall. But this is something I definitely do not recommend. There is more to Edmonton than WEM. Some of Edmonton's major attractions include the Muttart Conservatory, Valley Zoo, and Provincial Museum of Alberta. All of these attractions have national and even international reputations. There are also some attractions which are lesser known, but definitely worth the effort if you plan to stay in Edmonton for more than a few days. These include the John Walter Museum, the homeof one of the city's first residents; Devonian Botanic Garden, whichis beautiful in any season and features a humid-controlled butterfly house; and The Edmonton Space and Science Centre, with shows and displays that are both entertaining and educational. If you have visited Edmonton in the recent past and would like to share your experiences about your vacation, I would love to hear from you! Previous Features
