Volunteering

As I was flipping channels yesterday, the current Edge Poll on the Videotron station caught my eye. The question of the week, to paraphrase, was whether or not you think that volunteering your time to a non-profit organization was important. At the time I saw it, the results were currently about 42 per cent saying that yes, it was important, while a majority of 58 per cent said no, that it was a waste of time.

Something strikes me as horribly wrong with those numbers. Surely the majority of people in this city are generous and compassionate towards those who are less fortunate. I sincerely hope that the numbers change to a majority in favor of giving their time and resources. Speaking from experience, volunteering does as much for you as it does the people you are helping. You can better appreciate your life when dealing with others who are unlucky (and often in life it does come down to a matter of luck -- one day you might be the one in need of help). Giving makes you feel good all around.

I think the reason a lot of people don't volunteer is not because they would not like to, but because they don't know what opportunities are available. Many local non-profit organizations that work with volunteers have a Web presence though, and it just takes a matter of a few mouse clicks to find out which one is right for your particular set of skills.

The AIDS Network is always looking for compassionate volunteers to work their campaigns, visit the ill, and provide clerical support in the office. If you are over 18 and empathetic towards those with AIDS, this is a good way to help a cause that aims at educating the public and supporting those with the disease.

Habitat for Humanity is an international organization, with an Edmonton affiliate, that builds homes for needy families using volunteer labor and donated materials. This is your chance if you are handy with a hammer and saw, or if you have building materials you would like to donate.

Project Ploughshares is a Canadian peace and justice organization and is a great place to volunteer with if you are into social issues. Their Web site lists actions currently being looked into by the organization, their mandate, and contact info.

For those of you wanting to help the environment, you should definitely get in touch with EcoCity. The organization is looking for volunteers in a multitude of areas.

Next week I am going to showcase more opportunities for you to volunteer with local organizations.
