When the snow vanishes and the temperature rises, it's time to plan some fun outdoor activities! Here is a list of the top ten places to go and things to do during the Springtime in Edmonton.

  1. Visit Fort Edmonton Park, which opens the May long weekend. The park is a true travel back in time to a simpler era, complete with wagon rides, the incredible train and streetcar and, of course, delicious ice cream treats!

  2. Open all year round, the Valley Zoo is an educational and fun way to spend a day. Not only are people coming outside to have fun, but so are many of the animals who are heading outside after a winter in their indoor quarters.

  3. Grab your bike, rollerblades, scooter, or just walk or jog through Edmonton's River Valley. Also know as the Ribbon of Green, the River Valley has many trails suitable for hiking or biking. Bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it!

  4. Only a 20 minute drive to Devon, the Devonian Botanic Gardens has seasonal flowers and other plants, not to forget the incredible (and humid!) butterfly house! Be sure to being a camera and lots of film.

  5. Stroll down Whyte Avenue, latté cup in hand (or ice cream cone, or tea), window shop, enjoy the buskers and take in a show at one of the many clubs in the area (if you head there after-hours).

  6. For many Edmontonians with a green thumb, Spring and gardening are one and the same! Spend some time at Hole's Greenhouse or one of the many other garden shops around town and see what looks interesting.   7. Like gardening, Spring also can mean Spring cleaning! Get together with friends and neighbours to help each other out and make a barbeque to round out the day. Take turns doing the same at each other's homes. Cleaning doesn't have to be a chore!

  8. Coffee shops like Second Cup are open all year round, but now is the time you can finally sit on the patio outside. Enjoy a coffee or tea outdoors. It really does taste better.

  9. Two wheels are better than four! Cycle as much as you can, or rollerblade, or even just take a few extra walks outside. You'll feel great getting some exercise and fresh air at the same time.

10. Take in some of the city's excellent festivals -- Festival Season begins in Spring and runs throughout the summer.
