It's inevitable and will be here sooner than we think - the Year 2000. The City of Edmonton, our local government, plans to host and be a part of several events celebrating the dawn of the new millennium. You can find out more by checking out the City's Millennium 2000 page, but here are a few events that are already in the works.
A beautiful new park will be opening up in the city next year, Louise McKinney Park. The park is a natural ampitheatre overlooking the North Saskatchewan River, and will connect Edmonton's downtown to the river. The site has a few beautiful photos and watercolors of the area, as well as the history of the area's land. First Night expects over 100, 000 people to attend its Millennium themed New Year's Eve bash -- the biggest First Night Festival yet! As well, the Downtown Business Association is in the process of creating a Millennium Children's Park. A design for the park has already been decided after a contest, but the site for the park has not yet been determined. If you or your organization will be having a Millennium event that you would like to be recognized by the City of Edmonton, it is important that you contact the City of Edmonton Millennium 2000 Secretariat as soon as possible. The purpose of the secretariat is to help share information about Millennium information with those who are interested. Next week: Y2K and the response from the City. Previous Features
