Even before Spring arrives, those of us with green thumbs start thinking of our gardens. Even those of us who are not into planting our own flowers and vegetables enjoy the beauty of that which is around us.

Hole's Greenhouse is probably the number one stop for avid gardeners. Hole's sells all the supplies, seeds, plants and books you need to get started, or for the seasoned pro. Owner Lois Hole is a very well-known and respected member of the community. In addition to being the author of several best-selling books, she is the former Chancellor of the University of Alberta and is now the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

You can also get good deals on gardening supplies at the major retailers Canadian Tire and Home Depot. For information about growing pretty much anything, check out ICanGarden.com. This online magazine about gardening is run by Donna Dawson of St. Alberta and contains a lot of expert advice.

If your preference is to look rather than plant, one of the most beautiful gardens (several of them, in fact) can be found at the Devonian Botanic Gardens. There are several gardens to explore, as well as the humid butterfly house, where the creatures come right up to you -- people with long hair, be careful (I speak from experience!).

The Muttart Conservatory is another key attraction for plant lovers. The Muttart features four pavilions with a variety of plant life from around the world and different climate zones.

Perhaps you would like to take some courses in gardening and horticulture. Metro Community College (formerly Continuing Education), might have just what you are looking for.
