Last week I started a two-part series on the Year 2000 and Y2K, particularly in terms of how it will affect Edmonton. I listed some Millennium activities, but this week I want to take a look at the City's response to Y2K. Y2K, as you all probably know, is responsible for the biggest hullaballoo in the media these days. Edmontonians are also concerned, and as a result the City of Edmonton has created a Year 2000 page addressing some of these concerns.
According to the site, the City does not expect any major problems and suggests that citizens prepare for the Year 2000 just as they would for a severe winter storm. As far as the City's computer systems go, people are working behind the scenes in the various civic departments to ensure that no major failures occur, as well as developing contingency plans should something go wrong. An interesting site that the City links to is Y2K Alberta. It is a very extensive site showcasing essential service providers that are working together for Albertans, and how they are preparing for Y2K. Previous Features
