Spring Steps

Dateline: 04/26/99

Now that the snow is finally gone, it's that time of year to fix up the bike, take off that sweater, break out the sunglasses, and hit the streets!

Besides cycling through the streets and River Valley, spending a day window shopping on Whyte Avenue, and laying around soaking up the sun at Hawerlak Park, there are a lot of fun attractions to check out.

You can take a cruise on the Edmonton Queen, a riverboat with a scenic view of the North Saskatchewan River. Dinner and dacing awaits -- it all starts on May 1 and runs until September 18.

Fort Edmonton Park is a well-organized look at Edmonton's past as a fur trading center through to the 1920's. Street car and buggy rides are always a lot of fun.

Although the Valley Zoo is open in the winter as well as the spring and summer, the outdoor exhibits are naturally a lot more enticing when the weather is sunny.

Of course, the allure of outdoor sports attracts many people at this time of year. Biking, hiking, roller-blading -- next week I will showcase how to gear up for the season ahead.
