Many Edmontonians enjoy the peace and tranquility of working in their own gardens.
Whether you enjoy growing delicious, fresh vegetables or beautiful flowers, here are some resources for you!
Those of us with green thumbs start thinking of our gardens, even before spring arrives. Even those of us who are not into planting our own flora enjoy the beauty
of that which is around us -- with the exception of those awful flower bed ads, but that's a topic for another feature.:-)
If your preference is to look rather than plant, one of the most beautiful gardens (several of them, in fact) can be found at the Devonian Botanic Gardens. There are several gardens to explore,
as well as the humid butterfly house, where the creatures come right up to you -- people with long hair, be careful (I speak from experience!).
The Muttart Conservatory is another key attractio for plant lovers. The Muttart features four pavilions with a variety of plant life from around the world and different climate zones.
In some of the pavilions are exotic birds flying around.
Hole's Greenhouse is probably the number one stop for avid gardeners. Hole's sells all the supplies, seeds, plants, and books you need to get started, or for the seasoned pro. I can't seem to find a Web site for the St. Albert-based store, but owner
Lois Hole is a very well-known and respected member of the community. In addition to being the author of several best-selling
books, she is the former Chancellor of the University of Alberta
and is now the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
Perhaps you would like to take some courses in gardening and horticulture. Continuing Education offered by Edmonton Public Schools, might have just what you are looking for.
