A Unique Chance for Edmonton Women

Dateline: 06/14/99

Lady-Bug.net is a new online women's resource for everything from fashion, to health, to social issues affecting women from all walks of life. Geard especially towards "the modern woman," the site currently features cooking tips, advice, and interactive message boards. The site is seeking submissions from women alla cross Canada, and that includes Edmonton. I recently talked to Rita Morgan, the Webmaster of the site, to ask her what sorts of submissions she is looking for.

Paula: Who are you and what gave you the inspiration to start your site?

Rita: I am a middle aged woman who is employed as a manager at a large airline. My work deals with advertising and promotion as well as sales related activities. Four years ago my two sons who recently graduated from university (one in creative writing and the other in sociology) told me that they wanted to start up an internet web design company. I was delighted since both of the disciplines that they had chosen at school had small prospects for reasonable employment. Through my involvement with this company I became very interested in learning more about the internet. A year after we opened the business, one of my sons received an offer of employment from an internet company in New York. It was one that he couldn't refuse so we sold out. The "bug" stayed with me and for the next few years I surfed the web and kept updated on the trends. I began to notice that there was a limited number of sites that would be interesting to women and many of those offered content that I felt was "fluff". It looked interesting from the headlines but the articles ended up being disappointing. I was getting hungry for interesting and informative content from a Canadian women's point of view. My sons, now both employed by large internet companies encouraged me to start my own site.

Paula: What do you hope to accomplish with your site?

Rita: Here are my major goals. I would like to:

1. Keep Canadian women updated on issues that interest them.
2. Provide a place where they can share ideas through chats and bulletin boards.
3. Offer an on-line shopping area for busy women.
4. Provide part and full-time employment for Canadian women.

Paula: How can women in Edmonton get involved?

Rita: I would like to have women in Edmonton submit articles and ideas that they would like to see on the site. If they wish to contribute, and don't feel confident about their writing skills, I would still like to hear from them. Our copywriter can fix them up to make them sound very nice. With the help of these women, I will be able to design content that will appeal to a wider Canadian audiance.

Major Shake Up At A Channel

A well-known face will no longer be seen on Edmonton's A-Channel evening news broadcasts. In an unexpected turn of events, news anchor Alan Carter was fired. According to a source within the station, who did not want to be named, the order may have come from the Calgary A-Channel office, as most of the Edmonton staff appear to be in a state of shock over this decision. Alan was a well-liked and respected host, and will be sorely missed by his loyal viewers.
