Although it is illegal to cycle on the sidewalk (an offense which comes with a $35 price tag, I mean, ticket), sometimes the traffic gets so that it is not safe to ride on the road. I find this occurs most often downtown and on Whyte Avenue. It's sort of a catch-22 situation, since these areas are where a higher concentration of pedestrians are going to be found. When the going gets tough -- get off your bike and walk it.

For the cycling enthusiast who wishes to share their passion with other like-minded individuals, joining the Edmonton Bicycle and Touring Club is the thing to do. The EBTC organizes cycling trips during the spring, summer and fall and publishes a newsletter keeping members informed about cycling related issues in the city.

There are many sports shops in Edmonton that sell cycling gear. Many, in fact, specialize in bikes. And if you are a member of the EBTC, you are eligible for discounts. United Cycle, Hardcore Mountain Bike Store, River Valley Cycle and Sport and Track and Trail are just a few of the dozen or so sporting goods stores in Edmonton that specialize in bikes. Other areas of specialty at these same stores include hockey equipment and skiing.

In addition to the River Valley, I also enjoy cycling to the Legislature grounds, especially with camera in hand. I even go shopping from time to time at West Edmonton Mall -- having carrying bags on my bike is really helpful for errands.

Cycling is fun, exciting and a great way to exercise. And, best of all, it's a great way to get to know the city in a whole new way.
