Visit the official Whyte Avenue Web site. Whyte Avenue is only one of the many Attractions in Edmonton.
Whyte Avenue is arguably one of the hottest spots for people to hang out at during the summer. All of the many alternative clothing and music shops and cafes with outdoor patios make the area very appealing. Located near the University of Alberta, Whyte is a popular area for students and professionals alike.
Over the years more and more commercial chain stores have been sprouting up in the area -- merchants like Chapters and various fast food vendors. Some people feel that Whyte is losing its charm, as a result. Several years ago another great debate about Whyte involved the proliferation of the very thing that makes the area famous: sidewalk cafes. It seems that some people were concerned that tables and chairs were taking up too much of the sidewalk, leaving not enough room for people strolling the area.
More recently, some residents of the area feel concern about more and more bars and nightclubs opening up and casuing noice into the wee hours. Other people have strong opinions about panhandlers in the area. It seems that whenit comes to Whyte Avenue, everyone has an opinion.
Now Edmonton residents can voice their opinion at a new Web site which offers interactive forums and polls, as well as profiles of merchants in the area. I recently spoke to Wade Marshall, a representative of Whyteavenue.com, about the new site and some of the issues affecting the area.
