Paula: What is it about these historical events that inspire you to write songs about them?
John: "Edith Cavell" - As a youngster I remember going up to Jasper (National Park) and, upon seeing Mt. Edith Cavell, thinking that this must be the most beautiful place on earth. I felt compelled to re-tell the story of this heroic nurse in a way that would tie in with the incredible mountain we named after her.
"Ribbon of Broken Dreams" - The history books don't tell much of the real story on the issue of labor abuse during the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. I think it's more important than ever that we re-visit this one!
"Ballad of John Franklin" - I remember being dumbstruck by that picture of that poor sailor (John Torrington) who was dug up by Dr. Beattie and his research team. I don't think there's any way we can possibly imagine the horror and suffering that those poor men faced. I feel that the song really helps to drive home the importance and magnitude of the event, considering it took place so close to us here. Hopefully we can learn from their ill fate.
"Riel (the Batoche Campaign)" - I am part Metis on my mother's side. I never felt anything emotional or compelling about the Riel Rebellion, again because I think our history books softened it over away too much. I travelled to Batoche a couple of years ago for the first time. As I stood near the metis trenches, I got chills up my spine. The idea for the song and some lyrics hit me right there like a bomb.
Paula: What are your goals with regards to this project?
John: I just feel compelled to share with other teachers what has worked so well for me. I am also very overwhelmed at the public interest in the material. I'm getting more requests for performances than I can possibly take right now, due to my teaching committments, but I may be able to arrange something soon in that regard. My colleagues at Edmonton Public Schools have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic in their support.
Paula: Are there any future related projects in the works?
John: This project will be on-going. I have presented/performed at lots of conferences and conventions, and I always set aside time for people to brainstorm ideas for future material. Right now I have seven more songs already in the demo stage for "phase two".
I have also been in contact with the National Film Board and the CRB foundation, who may be able to do some of the material as animated videos.
I've also been working to create a song for a play that will be coming out for Fringe, and that one will be on the next phase as well.
