It's that time of year again -- almost! The time when a person's thoughts turn to colder temperature, snow, and the holiday season. And with the holiday season comes many necessary preparations, not the least of which is buying presents for those special people in our lives.

Shopping, Edmonton and West Edmonton Mall are definitely linked. With about 600 stores, you can find pretty much anything from the useful to the bizarre. But the Mall is not the be all and end all of shopping in Edmonton.

The allure of Whyte Avenue beckons, with bookstores, music, and nick-nacks of all kinds. Between the stores you can relax with a coffee or light meal at one of the numerous cafes in the area.

Even though there is a proliferation of stores and companies selling their goods on the Internet, many people still choose to do their shopping in person. The holidays just would not be complete without the stress of running around, arms full of packages. Here are some holiday shopping tips that will make your shopping experience much less pressured and filled with anxiety:

1. Don't leave everything until the last minute. All the good stuff will be picked out and you'll be trampled by others who are also habitual procrastinators.

2. Try to go to shopping during the day, on a weekday, if at all possible. A day off from work is the perfect day to shop. Have you ever tried getting a parking space at West Edmonton Mall on a weekend? It is not fun.

3. Remember -- the best gift is a gift that you yourself would want to receive. Are you into books? Try Greenwoods or Orlando for those hard to find alternative reads, or a best-selling novel. Like cycling? Head for Western Cycle -- you'll definitely get deals on any sport heading out of season.

I wish you and yours a happy, healthy and safe holiday season -- have fun shopping!
