Sounds of the City, Part II

Dateline: 12/21/98

Edmonton has a lot of homegrown musical talent. Last week I introduced you to some of Edmonton's best known musicians and musical groups. But there are so many, I wanted to take the opportunity to showcase a few more.

Alex Mahé is a children's entertainer, and a good friend of mine. At his new Web site you will find his biography, album ordering information, booking information, and much more -- in English and in French! You see, Alex is of French-Canadian descent and is fluently bilingual. His shows and albums consist of both English and French songs, and he often performs in schools where he shows the children the importance of knowing two languages.

Jr. Gone Wild is a legendary band in Edmonton. A country/rock band formed in the early 80's, even though the band broke up in 1995 people still know who these guys are. A major reason for that is because many of the members have gone on to their own solo careers, most notably leader Mike McDonald.

The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra has a Web site where you can find out all about their 1998/99 season. The orchestra has an international reputation and doesn't just play classical music -- in fact, many performers from various musical walks of life have played in concert with the orchestra, including Spirit of the West, Tom Cochrane, Liona Boyd, Rita MacNeil, and Natalie MacMaster.

Avid listeners of CJSR FM88, the University of Alberta's radio station, are certainly familiar with the band Greyhound Tragedy The band has recorded several independent releases and broen up and re-grouped a couple of times.

There is just so much talent here in Edmonton, musically-speaking, that I am definitely going to do more features about the local music scene in the future. Are there any local bands or artists you think deserve some coverage? Please email me and let me know.
